DIY Body Butter

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Shea Butter
  • ½ cup Cocoa Butter
  • ½ cup Coconut Oil
  • ½ cup jajoba
  • Optional: Essential Oils for scent

Instructions

  1. In a double boiler combine all ingredients except essential oils.
  2. Bring to medium heat and stir constantly until all ingredients are melted.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Stir in essential oils of your choosing.
  5. Move to fridge and let cool until starting to harden but still soft.
  6. Use a hand mixer to whip for 10 minutes until fluffy.
  7. Return to fridge for 10-15 minutes to set.
  8. Store in a glass jar with a lid and use as you would regular lotion or body butter. If your home stays above 75 degrees, it may soften and need to be kept at the fridge, but it will stay whipped at a temperature lower than that.

It’s October, and while most are going to haunted attractions and other fun Halloween events, some are participating in fundraisers, walks, and other events to raise awareness about breast cancer. At this point, everyone has been affected by breast cancer in some way, shape or form and this post will touch on the signs, symptoms, treatment and prevention that people should know.

The Facts

  • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime
  • Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women
  • Although breast cancer in men is rare, 2150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and around 410 will die each year

Face the facts, these are daunting statistics that should make you livid about breast cancer! So how can you detect and hopefully prevent breast cancer?

Signs and Symptoms

  • Tenderness or lumpiness in or near the breast or underarm area
  • A change in skin complexion or enlargement of the pores in the skin around the breast
  • A lump in the breast
  • Dimpling anywhere on the breast
  • Any change in size or shape of the breast
  • Unexplained swelling or shrinkage
  • Nipple turned slightly inward or inverted
  • Scaly, swollen, or red skin on or around the breast

Risk Factors

The following risk factors help higher-risk women to increase surveillance and breast cancer prevention strategies.

  • Women
  • 20 and older
  • Family history
  • Exposure to radiation
  • Breast density
  • Ethnicity
  • Menses cycle

Prevention

With these practices, women can keep a close eye and detect early signs of breast cancer.

  • A healthy diet
  • Self examination, done once monthly
  • A clinical exam, done at annual gynecology visit
  • Mammogram, done every year or every other year for women over 40 (women under 40 with breast cancer risk factors should consult physician for early mammogram)
