Sex Toy Material Guide Part 1

a collection of different types of sextoys, including dildo, vibrators and butt plugs over a dark wooden surface

Sex Toys are made from many types of material. This training guide will help to train store staff on the various sex toy materials along with manufactures’ examples.

PVC and Plastics

There are quite a few vibrators (both internal and external) made of hard plastic, from the cheaper side of things up into the luxury vibes. Wondering why plastic vibes are so popular? They’re fairly affordable and transmit vibrations like no other material. One of our best sellers Pocket Rocket by Doc JohnsonPocket Rocket is one such inexpensive yet oh-so-awesome vibrator made of a hard plastic.  Almost all plastic toys are phthalate-free, making them body friendly. Plus, they’re easy to clean, because they aren’t as porous as those previous materials. You can wash them easily with soap and warm water, or a recommended toy cleaner.

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to clean, comes in lots of pretty colors, phthalate free, transmits vibrations well.

Cons: Hard material, non-sterilizable,

Lube compatibility: Water-based or silicone-based.

Jelly (aka Jell-e, Gelle, Gel-E, Sili-Gel, etc)

Jelly used to be (and in some places, still is) the most popular material for sex toys, particularly vibrators, dildos, butt plugs and cock rings. Why? It’s soft and squishy, very bendable, and can transmit vibrating sensations extremely well. It also comes in a variety of pretty colors, making it perfect for exciting and designer toys. You’ll know its jelly because it is see through (or partially clear).

Pros: Pretty colors, super soft, inexpensive, transmits vibrations well.Jelly

Cons: Some odor,  can cause irritation.

Lube compatibility: Water-based.

Latex/Rubber

Toys made from latex are usually dildos and anal toys, although some vibrators contain latex. Very popular in the kink community due to many people enjoying the feel of latex. Latex and rubber toys are not very durable, and will break down over time, especially when exposed to heat, dry air, or alcohol based cleanser. Keep in mind that many people have allergies or sensitivities to latex. People with these intolerances should stay far away from latex/rubber toys, and might want to consider  another material such as silicone, glass, ceramic or metal.

SE0618013Pros: Inexpensive, comes variety of colors, solid, great for latex fetishists.

Cons: Can irritate people with latex allergies.

Lube compatibility: Water-based

Silicone

It’s not wonder than this material is often called the best in the business…of sex toys, that is. Real silicone products use 100% medical grade silicone, which is the same material that is used in lots of medical settings. It is completely hypoallergenic, phthalate free and is sterilizable, which means you can choose to share your toys, or use them both vaginally and anally.lelo

How do you know if your product is made from silicone? Real silicone is never clear/see-through, and it will have no smell.

Pros: Comes in lots of fun colors, easy to shape, transmits vibrations fairly well, sterilizable/easy to share, hypoallergenic, phthalate free,  easy to clean.

Cons: Cost:  Silicone toys are generally more expensive than other toy materials.

Lube compatibility: Water-based
